Clear responsibility remains essential

Under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2016, the Principal Designer is appointed by the client on projects involving more than one contractor and has defined duties for planning, managing, monitoring and coordinating health and safety during the pre-construction phase.

Advisory support does not by itself transfer an appointment or a legal duty. The client’s appointments, the Principal Designer’s authority and the boundaries of MacSafety Solutions’ input must be clear in writing.

A typical advisory sequence

  5. Record outstanding matters and agreed handover requirements.
Confirm before launchThe current service is described as Principal Designer advisory support only. Confirm separately if MacSafety Solutions will ever accept the formal Principal Designer appointment; that would require different wording, competence evidence, insurance review and a clearly defined appointment.
